Canada Day in Canmore, it is AWESOME!
Canada Day is fast approaching and residents all across the nation will be checking the weather reports and deciding how best to spend the holiday. This national day is one where families can unite for a chilled out day in the sun and friends can meet for a day of celebration. Canada Day can be enjoyed all across the country – from the most remote mountain village to the busiest city streets – but Canmore provides the ideal blend of entertainment, relaxation and community spirit. Proud Canadians, either local or from out of town, can come together beneath the mountains to enjoy great food, live music, kid-friendly games and an impressive fireworks display.
Spend a relaxing day soaking up the atmosphere and playing games in Centennial Park.
The Centennial Park is the ideal place for Canmore residents to gather on this national day, and tourists are more than welcome to drop by to enjoy the festivities. If there is ever a national celebration, local event or community fund-raising effort, this park is the place to come because of the great facilities on offer and the atmosphere that is generated.
The day will start in a rather energetic manner at 9am with the Canmore Canada Day Family Fun Run & Walk. Locals are encouraged to take part at their own pace over either 3km, 5km or the more grueling 10km. Keen athletes can raise money by running the full length and school children can play their part with a short walk. However you take part – even if you are merely a spectator – you can appreciate the community spirit of this small town in this celebration of what it means to be a Canadian in Canmore. With the fun run over, it is time to rest and recuperate with some great food and drink, some entertainment and plenty of fun activities. There are food booths – (yet to be determined) – that will be in operation across the town all day to provide a fine lunch on the park grass or a takeaway treat in the evening.
It is all about getting outside, enjoying a day off with the family and feeling ALIVE!
One of the great things about choosing Canmore as a destination for Canada Day is that you know that it wont be as hectic and exhausting as events in the major cities, but that there is enough local pride and community spirit to create a fun-packed day. This fantastic blend is seen in the different aspects of the event that are dotted around key locations in Canmore. Sticking in Centennial Park, the iconic Stan Rogers stage – home to the Canmore Folk Festival – will be hosting a series of acts from 2:30 to 5:30pm.
It is clear that Canmore Canada Day celebrations are designed to appeal to as many visitors as possible, from the city folk that want a more laid back approach to the day in the mountain air to the locals that are appreciative of the chance to celebrate with family and friends. Kids are more than welcome during the day and there is a large Kids Zone planned for the afternoon in Centennial Park. There are a number of the more traditional attractions that you would expect from a local fair, such as the face paining tent and bouncy castle, but there are some interesting games and zones where kids can burn of a lot of energy and perhaps make new friends. There is the Monster Obstacle Course, PGA golf course, a craft area and the chaotic-sounding Water Splash Zone.
As the sun sets, head to the center of town for some live music before enjoying the fireworks in Millennium Park.
The day will end in Canmore’s grand Millennium Park at approximately 10:30pm. The town has a strict no-fireworks policy for the public, due to the town proximity to the forests and mountains, but that doesn’t mean that city officials don’t know how to put on a great show. The whole town can come together to watch a spectacle of fireworks bouncing off the natural landscape, engulfing this peaceful mountain town in light and sounds and punctuating the long day with an impressive exclamation point. As the last of the smoke drifts over the peaks and the last gasps of delight turn to resounding applause, the whole of Canmore – locals and visitors alike – can know that they celebrated Canmore Canada Day in style.
While the fireworks can be viewed spectacularly from the park, they can also be seen from various locations throughout the town. Some exceptional viewing points include:
- The Bow River
- Top of the reservoir (above Grassi Lakes)
- Benchlands Terrace walking trail
- The Canmore Hoodoos
